Linh, and the ninety seconds that decide a group
Lost For Real · 12 January 2026 · 6 min read

Our co-host in Hanoi has a theory: the whole trip is decided in the first ninety seconds of the first dinner.
Linh grew up above her family's noodle shop and has a very specific idea about how strangers become a group. It has nothing to do with icebreakers.
"Never start with names," she says. "Start with food that is difficult to eat." So the first dinner is deliberately messy — things that need both hands, things that need explaining, things somebody will inevitably drop.
Ninety seconds of shared incompetence, and the group has skipped four days of politeness. We have watched it work with fourteen groups now.
This is what we mean by people before places. The route matters. The person opening the door matters more.
Give people something to do with their hands and they will forget to be shy.
